love shoot #19: elegant mountain wedding {maclean & erin}

I can hardly contain myself with today’s, frankly, amazing wedding by Canadian photographer Jamie Delaine. Maclean & Erin’s elegant mountain wedding, in Vancouver,  is full of personal details, laughter and absolute beauty. The theme was inspired by their love of movies, Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter in particular!  You’ll just have to carry on reading to see how they did it in such a sophisticated way!

I also  have to apologise now, as there are so many gorgeous images I had trouble editing them down.  You might want to get settled for this one!

Erin got ready at home with her mum and bridemaids, whilst Maclean joined the boys at his parents house for breakfast.  Then he travelled over to Erin’s for a ‘first-look’.  This is the first wedding I’ve blogged where the couple did a first-look!  The couple meet before the ceremony to spend a few moments together, and have their couple portraits taken.  I’m sure this fills even the most non-traditional among you with dread, he’s not meant to see you in the dress before the wedding, right?!  Having a first look is very common across the pond, and slowly becoming less unusual here in the UK too as couples choose to plan their weddings a little differently!  It’s a chance to spend a quiet few minutes together before all your guests arrive, and a great opportunity to get your couple shoot done early, so you get to spend time with the people you love during the reception.

Maclean is a wedding videographer (check out his amazing work at Hello Tomorrow)  was very involved in the wedding planning, along with his bride and their mums (big brownie points for that Maclean!).  So, today we have some words from the groom:

Erin and I met 5 years ago. We hit it off immediately but I knew that Erin was way out of my league. She liked me right away but was reluctant because I was just finishing high school and a little too young for her. That summer I graduated and she came around :)

I proposed to Erin on July 23rd 2010. I took her to one of our favourite places at a nearby lake. I was sweating the whole time leading up to it, not because I was nervous but because it was SO hot outside and I had to wear a light jacket to try and hide the ring box in my pocket. She kept asking me as we walked why I was sweating and why I was so persistent on keeping my jacket on. Luckily she didn’t catch on and when I asked she screamed ‘yes’!

We chose to get married in North Vancouver at Highlands United Church and have our reception up at Grouse Mountain. We chose this because Erin was practically raised in the mountains and we really wanted that vibe for our wedding.

The most important things we considered while planning our day was to make sure our guests had fun. We had a lot of videos played, fun MC’s, an incredible band and even a cookie bar for dessert.

Our theme was very much inspired by Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. It sounds cheesey I know but we really wanted to just take some subtle ideas from those movies and incorporate them into the decor. Erin and I are HUGE fans of those movies and watch them very regularly.

Instead of having fancy font and formal grammar for our wedding stationery, we had photos of us holding big white cards on which we wrote out the members of the bridal party (see Jamie Delaine’s blog for photos). We also had a cookie bar and for party favours we had jars of custom M&M’s with our names and wedding date printed on them. Also I insisted that me and the groomsmen wore matching skate shoes (I’ve skateboarded my whole life).

I am a HUGE fan of their whole stationery suite.  I love how it brings together the whole theme, injecting their infectious personalities and Maclean’s talents behind a video camera too.  They even made  a bridal party video, where they introduced each bridal party member with memories from their childhood and interview clips.  Such a great idea to keep their guests entertained and no doubt encourage a few laughs!

Their ceremony took place at the most beautiful church in Vancouver!  I love the warmth of the timber, just perfect for this mountain-woodland themed wedding.  Erin’s elegant bouquet of soft white florals accented with twigs and beautiful feathers coordinated with the twigs set up at the altar and around the church, accompanied by the soft glow of candles and lanterns to great a warm glow.

After the ceremony, the guests were transported from the church to the reception venue on the Grouse Mountain Skyride!  What a great idea and definitely something their guests will always remember!  In the reception venue, they filled huge vases  with floating candles, rocks, twigs and moss softened with white flowers to create an elegant, warm and cosy atmosphere. Erin is a self-proclaimed cookie monster so they skipped the wedding cake and had a cookie bar instead, with treats made by their mums.

Our first dance was to Louie Armstrong’s “When You’re Smiling“. We like to have fun and smile so it seemed like the perfect song for us.

Maclean has lots of talented, musical friends (he’s the drummer in a band called Maclean), so they sang and played all night while the guests danced.

My advice for future brides and grooms would definitely be not to stress to much. Make sure you make your wedding fun and don’t get all worked up about traditions and formalities. It’s your day so make it fun.

If this simply isn’t enough wedding eye-candy for you for today, then be sure to check back later this afternoon, as I will be sharing Erin & Maclean’s wedding video!  Get the tissues ready, it’s a tear-jerker!

A huge thank you to Erin & Maclean for sharing your day, I wish you many happy years of watching movies and laughing together.

It’s been a delight to share Jamie Delaine’s work too, make sure you check out Jamie’s blog for more of her beautiful work.
